Long Night For Phils

Last night the Phillies lost 2-1 in 14 innings and were unable to complete the sweep against the Mets. It was just one of those long grind it out games where neither team did much offensively.

The game got off to an interesting start when Cliff Lee loaded the bases in the top of the first. Luckily Lee worked his way out of the jam and many other tough innings to go 7 innings for the Phils giving up 1 run. After a 34 pitch first inning, Lee was able to rebound and keep his pitch count down and go deep into the game for the Phils.

On the other side Chris Young was just as good. Young pitched 7 scoreless innings and the Phils only managed 2 hits off of him. The only run that the Phils scored came in the 8th off of Jason Isringhausen when Ryan Howard check swinged a single to left to score John Mayberry.

Unable to decide things in 9 innings the game headed into extras. In extras Pedro Beato of the Mets pitched 3 scoreless innings before handing the ball over to Taylor Buchholz who pitched the final 2 innings. Danys Baez pitched 2 shutout innings but in Kyle Kendrick's 3rd inning he surrendered the game winning run. Ronnie Paulino who was 5-7 last night smacked a double to score David Wright. The Phils went down in order in the bottom of the inning and lost by a final of 2-1.

The loss puts the Phils at 18-9. Although a sweep would have been nice I'm overall happy with the Phils 2 out of 3 effort. The Phils exploded for 10 runs on Friday and gutted out a close game on Saturday behind Roy Halladay to win the series. Jayson Werth and the Nationals will come to town next in the second series of this home stand. The series starts tomorrow night and Cole Hamels will get the nod.
