Drinking Played Factor In Carter & Richards Trade

Various Philly Sports websites such as crossingbroad, broad street hockey and many others are reporting that Richards and Carter's party life style may have played a factor in them both being traded.

According to crossingbroad, Laviolette had a "Dry Island" system in which players were asked to make a pledge to abstain from alcohol for a month during the season. Richards and Carter reportedly didn't participate.

The original report a Daily News article by Dan Gross, reports that news of Richards and Carter not taking Dry Island pledge soon reached GM Paul Holmgran. Here is an excerpt from the article:

"In a phone interview Thursday, Flyers General Manager Paul Holmgren confirmed that Richards and Carter hadn't put their numbers on the board, but said there had been others who declined. "We carry 23 players and there wasn't 23 numbers up there."

These reports don't surprise me as I have been aware of Richards and Carter's drinking and partying life style for a few months now. Richards and Laviolette definitely had a strained relationship from the get go and Mike's unwillingness to participate in Dry Island could have been the final straw and ultimately landed him in Los Angeles.

As for Carter I personally saw him in Sea Isle earlier this summer surrounded by women on the beach. Something tells me they were most likely hitting the bars later that night, just a guess.

Richie and Carter were great players but if Laviolette or Holmgren felt that they were not totally committed to being team players and they were too preoccupied with partying, than trading them was the right move. Hopefully the trades will benefit the Flyers in the long run and not come back to hurt them.

  3. I am not bsing when I make this comment. Three years ago my brother went out for his 21st bday. He was at a bar with Carter and Rile Cote. They loved it. He said Cote was the greatest and he came in the limo with them. Carter was an ass and called all of the girls that were there ugly and annoying. Also my brother saw Carter out partying in OCNJ this spring on the nights before the playoff games. He'd be out till 3 am down there and then go play hockey at 7 pm that night. Understandable why this is rumored. Its true
