For Flyers, Good News Bad News

The Flyers are currently on a 7 game winning streak.  Their star goaltender is no longer lost in the woods.  And on top of that, the Flyers are currently starring in the HBO series 24/7 as they gear up to play in the Winter Classic.  Life is good right now for the Flyers, right?

Well, sort of. Just a few days after Giroux's bad news, today the Flyers announced that defenseman Chris Pronger will be out for the remainder of the regular season and post season with post concussion symptoms. Here is the official statement.

“After consultation with respected concussion specialists Dr. Joseph Maroon and Dr. Micky Collins, it is the opinion of both doctors that Chris is suffering from severe post concussion syndrome. It is the recommendation of Doctors Maroon and Collins that Chris not return to play for the Philadelphia Flyers for the remainder of the 2011-12 season or playoffs. Chris will continue to receive treatment and therapy with the hope that he can get better.”

So while a lot of things are going right for the Flyers in terms of wins and losses, the growing injuries both to Giroux and Pronger are definitely bad news for the team in the long run.  But the Flyers continue to win and you really have to give a lot of credit to Peter Laviolette and this team, and the tremendous effort they put forth against the Canadiens tonight.

Andrej Meszaros told Coatsey after the game that he didn't know about the Pronger news during the game, so I'm assuming that all of the guys found out about Prongs after the game and it didn't affect their play.  But it was still impressive that the Flyers were able to get it done in just their second game without Giroux.  Everyone played hard and contributed, and the Flyers came away with a tough road victory, and extended their win streak to 7 games.

The Flyers just keep overcoming obstacles.  Whether it's a untimely penalty at the end of the game, or a season ending injury to a star player, the Flyers find ways to make things happen and win hockey games.  And for those of you that watched the 24/7 special on HBO last night, you know first hand that this a young, hard working group of guys that really want to win and have fun.  There truly is something special about this team, and it is amazing to watch them overcome any obstacles that are thrown their way.
