Meet Juan Castillo

After the disappointing Sean McDermott era in Philadelphia Eagles history, Juan Castillo will step in this season as the new defensive coordinator.

Castillo was formerly the Eagles offensive line coach and will now be making the shift to the defensive side of the ball. Since Jim Johnson’s passing, the Eagles haven’t been able to find a suitable replacement.

Sean McDermott struggled in the past two seasons and Big Red knew that it was time for a change. But before Reid could move Castillo to the defensive side of the ball he had to find a replacement offensive line coach. Once he was able to hire Howard Mudd who is one of the best offensive line specialists in the game, he was able to make Castillo the defensive coordinator.

For years Castillo had always said that if he were able to move back to defense he would be “deadly.” According to Castillo, he helped Jim Johnson with different blitz packages by informing Johnson how the offensive line would react to different blitzes and coverage schemes.

It’s a good theory that Castillo will be a good defensive coordinator because he has an idea as to how the offense will react. But a complete shift from the offensive to the defensive side of coaching has rarely been done and it will be interesting to see if it will pay off for the Eagles.

Castillo seems like a very enthusiastic and excitable guy and extremely grateful about the opportunity Andy has given him. As the Birds head into their final pre season game, watch to see what this new look Eagles defense led by Castillo is able to do.
