After Thursday night's 5-4 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks, goalie Ilyz Bryzgalov refused to speak to the media. Brygalov said that his silence after the the game was due to sickness.
“It’s a team policy, not to disclose any injuries or sickness." And during an interview yesterday Bryz commented, "“I choose to be quiet today. You don’t like it, go to the Supreme Court, guys.”
It's pretty obvious that Bryz's silence is not due to his own choice and the Flyers brass are clearly ordering him to cut down on his outlandish comments. Bryzgalov's comments on 24/7 about the universe and huskies were funny and harmless. But when he personally announced that he would not be starting in the Winter Classic, that's when he crossed the line. And it wasn't so much the fact that he announced the news, it was more so the manner in which he did it. In case you missed it, here is Bryz's official announcement:
"I have a great news and even better news. OK, great news I'm not playing tomorrow night and good news we have a chance to win the game tomorrow."
At this point I think Bryzgalov is starting to become a bit of a distraction. His teammates are laughing at him, fans are laughing at him, and he really needs to start taking things more seriously. One thing Flyers fans have to keep in mind is the fact that before coming to Philadelphia, Bryz played for Anaheim and Phoenix. Playing in non-major markets, Bryzgalov was able to fly under the radar and get away with his shenanigans and silly comments. But now he is in a hockey crazed city where his every little move is under a microscope. Bryzgalov needs to realize that he can't continue to goof off especially when he is struggling.
I think that come April, Bryzgalov will have his game together and the Flyers can go into the playoffs confident that they have a true number one goalie. But until then, I think Bryz needs to focus more on his game and less on making dumb comments to the media.
It has officially been announced that Bryzgalov will start today against Ottawa. Hopefully he can get a strong start under his belt and put these distractions behind him.
