Sixers For Sale

The Philadelphia 76ers are in talks with billionaire Josh Harris about selling the team. Harris is a New York-based leveraged buyout specialist, and is a co-founder of Apollo Global Management. The talks between Comcast-Spectacor are still ongoing and a source close to the disscussion calls the deal "imminent".

Harris was reported to have a net worth of 1.5 billion according to Forbes' 2011 billionaire rankings. Some people have pointed out that Harris may only see this as an oppurtunity to make money, rather than win basketball games.

Other partners in the deal include David Blitzer, a private equity executive, and formor NBA player agent and Sacramento Kings executive Jason Levien.

PNC Park Review

As an avid baseball fan I have traveled to quite a few major league ballparks. Whether it was for Phillies road games or just to watch a game, I’ve done my best to make it to a solid number of major league stadiums. So far I’ve been to:

-Wrigley Field in Chicago
-Old Yankee Stadium, New Yankee Stadium, and Shea Stadium in New York
-Nationals Park in Washington D.C.
-The Vet and Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia
-PNC Park in Pittsburgh

Previously, Wrigley was undoubtedly my favorite ballpark. There is something almost magical about the close proximity of the fans to the field, the Ivy covered walls, and the location of the stadium right in the middle of a North Side Chicago neighborhood. But after attending the Phils Pirates game this past weekend, PNC Park has surpassed Wrigley and is now in first place on my list.

PNC Park is snuggled up against the Allegheny river and is just a short walk from downtown Pittsburgh. If you walk over the Roberto Clemente Bridge from downtown you find yourself immersed in a party scene outside the streets of the stadium. There are street performers, shops, restaurants and just about everything to keep everyone entertained. The scene outside the stadium has a similar feel to the neighborhood atmosphere of Wrigley.

Inside the stadium there are more restaurants and entertainment opportunities. You can walk full circle around the stadium and when you are up on the main concourse the game is visible similar to CBP. When you finally take your seat the view is breathtaking. The beautiful Pittsburgh skyline and Roberto Clemente Bridge is visible in the back drop. When you look out on the field there is a “cozy” feeling as the field looks extremely small. The fans are right on top of the players and it definitely has a similar proximity feel to that of Wrigley.

After the game fans flood the streets and head back over the Roberto Clemente Bridge to downtown. There is also a river walk where you can walk along the Allegheny river and parallel the downtown skyline.

It’s extremely different from CBP because there are actually things to do outside of the stadium. There is a neighborhood feel to PNC that is missing from the Bank which is located smack in the middle of nowhere. Overall if you have never been to PNC Park I strongly recommend that you go. It combines features from many stadiums and adds its’ own flare to create one hell of a baseball experience.

One of my favorite features about PNC is the Roberto Clemente
Bridge. The bridge connects downtown Pittsburgh directly to the ball park and it is extremely unique. The bridge is set aside for pedestrians and is strictly for walking during Steelers and Pirates gamedays. I also loved the close proximity of the fans to the field. At some stadiums you feel extremely far from the game but at PNC you feel like you are practically on top of the players. Lastly I loved the location of PNC. It blows CBP out of the water and there is so much more todo than just go to the game. The location of PNC gives it an edge over a lot of other MLB stadiums.

The only real complaint I have about the park is that the Phillies lost both games I attended. But other than that PNC Park is a beautiful place to watch a ball game and a must see stadium for all baseball fans everywhere.

Phils Lose In Pittsburgh Again

Maybe I'm bad luck or maybe the Phillies are just taking an offensive vacation. Either way I'm 0-2 this weekend at PNC Park and I'm beginning to get frustrated with this inconsistent Phillies offense. Usually I'm pretty even keeled and try to keep a good perspective when the Phils struggle at the plate. But after tonight's disappointing performance in which the Phils managed just 3 runs, I've had just about enough of this non-existent offense.

The Phils lost tonight by a final of 6-3 mainly because they failed to hit with runners in scoring position. How many times did Ryan Howard roll over a weak ground ball with runners on? How many times did Chase Utley lift a weak fly ball to left when all we needed was a sharply hit grounder? The Phils got base runners but simply failed to come through with runners on. Even in the top of the first when the Phils scored they still should have done more damage. Rollins toughed out a hot lead off double down the line. Placido Polanco then hit a single up the middle to put runners on the corners with no outs. But Utley proceeded to strike out, and Howard hit into what would have been an inning ending double play had it not been for a tremendous take out slide from Placido Polanco. The Phils barely squeaked out a run in the first and should have scored at least 3 to start out the game.

The Bucs then responded with 2 runs in the bottom of the 2nd to take a 2-1 lead. The Phils knotted things at 2 in the 4th when Domonic Brown grounded out to score Shane Victorino. In the bottom of the inning Lyle Overbay worked a leadoff triple. Raul Ibanez should have held Overbay to a single but he instead attempted a diving catch and the ball scooted past him enabling Overbay to practically walk to third. Chris Snyder grounded out to score Overbay and Brandon Wood followed with a solo homerun to give the Bucs a 4-2 lead. The Pirates added a run in the 7th and another in the 8th to give them a comfortable 6-2 lead going into the top of the 9th.

Ibanez led off 9th with a double, Ruiz walked and Wilson Valdez singled to load the bases. With 2 outs Placido Polanco singled and the Phils made it a 6-3 game. Utley came to the plate as the go-ahead run but he lofted a gentle fly ball to left to end the game in a 6-3 Phillies defeat.

Basically the game was a bunch of dumb Phillies defensive mistakes that led to some runs that shouldn't have been allowed. With Kendrick pitching the Phillies should have tightened up on defense and done a better job of making plays behind him. Kendrick has been known to have some nights where he simply implodes but don't be fooled by tonight's boxscore. Although Kendrick gave up 4 runs the defense behind him was non existent and there were some runs that weren't entirely his fault.

Offensively the Phils will come out of this slump as they always do. But for now it's extremely frustrating to watch this team at the plate. Tomorrow Halladay will attempt to stop the bleeding and end this 4 game skid. And hopefully the Phils offense will make an appearance and finally score more than 3 runs. As I conclude my rant I will leave you with this bit of good news; I will not be attending tomorrow's series finale at PNC Park. Hopefully that will help the Phils in their attempt to climb out of this recent skid.

Phils Lose Extra Inning Battle

After an almost 6 hour drive through the beautiful state of Pennsylvania, my family and I finally reached PNC Park in Pittsburgh to watch the Phillies take on the Pirates. The weather was nice, the stadium was beautiful and the stage was set for a classic inter-state battle.

The Phils made a little noise in the top of the first but were unable to get any runs across. The Phils then proceeded to go down in order in the next 4 innings. The Bucs didn't do much better and got their first hit in the 4th when Andrew McCutchen singled to center. After 5 innings there was still no score and it was a classic pitcher's duel between Cole Hamels and Jeff Karstens. Hamels was cruising behind his lively fastball and his spot on change up while Kearstens had his off speed and curveball keeping the Phils off balanced.

Finally in the sixth the Phils scored on an RBI-single from Chase Utley. But the Bucs responded in the bottom of the inning and tied the game thanks to a sac-fly from Jose Tabata. From there Hamels pitched a scoreless 7th and 8th and Contreras pitched a shutout 9th. For the Bucs Karstens was replaced by Evan Meek in the 8th and the hard throwing Joel Hanrahan pitched a scoreless 9th.

Carlos Ruiz worked a lead off walk in the 10th and that would be the Phillies' only base runner in extra innings. The Phils went down in order in the 11th and 12th and failed to get anything going. Fianlly with 2 outs in the bottom of the 12th Danys Baez allowed a single to Xavier Paul. Paul eventually stole 2nd and Jose Tabata knocked in his second run of the night to give the Pirates a 2-1 victory.

This is the third straight loss for the Phils and the third straight game in which there offense has been non-existent. The Phils need to start doing a better job of moving runners along and playing small ball. Hamels pitched a gem and he deserves more run support.

I was going to include my thoughts about PNC Park in this post but I think it deserves an article of its' own. Stay tuned to Broad Street Marching for my thoughts on PNC Park as well as more Phillies Pirates coverage.

Phillies Move Singleton Back To First

Some interesting news came out of the Philadelphia Phillies minor league system last night.  The Phillies announced that they have moved one of their top prospects, Jonathan Singleton back to first base.  Singleton was moved to left field recently because of Ryan Howard locking down first base in the majors for a long time.  The Phillies believe that Singleton will be up in the majors when Howard is still there, so instead of making him wait longer until Howard is no longer manning first base they hoped that left field would work for him.

The 19 year old has a lot of time to learn, and the Phillies did not rule out a possible return to the outfield in the future.  Singleton has not been the same hitter, and they believed he was starting to press to much.  They felt that putting him back at first, where he is more comfortable will allow him to relax and get his hitting back on track.  Singleton is happy about the move and feels he will be more relaxed now.  First will allow him to stay more focused in the game and not worry about each at-bat, like he was in the outfield.

Singleton is still young and has a lot more time to develop into an elite player like he is projected to be.  For now it makes more sense to have him relaxed and focused early on in his career.  The move should help him get his hitting back on track and just be more comfortable playing the game.  He is likely to play at first for the rest of the season.  In the future if he is ready for the majors, but Howard is still blocking his path do not be surprised if they re-visit the outfield experiment.

Phillies Draft Needs

The Phillies hope to find future players that will eventually
 be playing in this ballpark.
Many people do not know, but the 2011 MLB Draft is coming up on Monday.  This draft is probably the least exciting out of all the major sports, which is why no one really knows about it.  This marks an opportunity for the Philadelphia Phillies to replenish their farm system and fill some needs.  With so many rounds and so many surprise players it is always better to select by talent, but should the Phillies select by position instead this year.  The Phillies have a lot of young talent in the outfield and right handed pitching, so maybe they should address other needs like middle infielders, catchers and left handed pitching.  Here is a look at the positions the Phillies could really use some talent at.

Middle Infield:  The Phillies are getting old in the majors with Jimmy Rollins and Chase Utley, let alone one is in his contract year and the other has injury problems.  With that said the Phillies minor league middle infielders aren't so great.  There is some talent in the minors like Freddy Galvis, he is very good defensively, but will his bat ever be ready for the majors.  Other then Galvis the Phillies have a few very young and raw middle infielders, none are eye popping though.  With that said middle infield is a major need for the Phillies and not just players to fill the spots, they need players that are highly talented.  In a couple years the Phillies infield is going to look differently and this is the year to find those players.  Bottom line, this is one of the biggest needs for the Phillies, besides in the majors they have no talent at middle infield and they need to change that.

Left Handed Pitching:  Another position that the Phillies could really use some help is lefty pitching.  The Phillies addressed part of this issue last year, but one player isn't going to do it.  Every team always wants and needs lefty pitching so the Phillies aren't the only team looking for lefties.  The Phillies could use some good lefty prospects in their farm system.  Look for the Phillies to draft a couple lefty pitchers as they look to fill this need as well.

Catcher:  The catcher position has never been a position of greatness for the Phillies and it looks to stay that way if they do not find another good prospect.  They have Carlos Ruiz who has been solid in the majors, and have a good young prospect in Sebastian Valle.  Valle has been catching his whole career in the minors, but some project him to eventually be a third basemen.  Anyway even if Valle is going to stick at catcher the Phillies still need another young prospect.  The Phillies could really use a talented catcher in their system and drafting one on Monday or even a couple seems very likely.

The Phillies are rumored to not just select for positions they need, but just talent overall.  The Phillies do need to address these positions, but they also need to just select the best player.  It will be interesting to see if the Phillies can fill their needs with the best talent available, but we will have to wait until Monday to see how it all works out.

Phillies Pirates Preview

This weekend the Phils will travel to Pittsburgh to take on the 26-29 Pirates. After a disappointing series against the Nationals, the Phils will look to get back on track and try to maintain their status as the best team in baseball.

Phils Previous

The Phils are 9-6 in their last 15 games and for the most part are playing solid baseball. This past week the Phils took the first game of the series against the Nationals but their offense fell asleep in the last 2 games and the Phils dropped 2 out of 3. Although the Phils lost 2 out of 3 to the Nationals it was their first series loss since May 17th. The Phils currently have a 2 game lead in the NL East and will look to add to that lead this weekend.

Pirates Previous

The Pirates are coming into this series with an 8-6 record in their last 14 games. Most recently the Pirates were in New York facing off against the Mets in a 4 game series. The Mets took the first game on Monday, but the Pirates battled back on Tuesday and Wednesday and won mainly because of their offense. The Pirates lost today by a final of 9-8 and the series ended in a 2-2 split. Hopefully the Phils pitching staff will be able to tame this Pirates offense.

What To Look For

-Shane Victorino is set to return to the Phillies lineup on Friday night. Hopefully he will be able to spark this Phillies offense which has put up just 3 runs in their past 2 games.

-The Pirates are an awful home team and have a 9-14 record this year at PNC Park. Look for the Phils to take at least 2 out of 3

-The Phils will send Cole Hamels and Roy Halladay to the mound in this series, nuff said

Pitching Matchups

Friday 7:05 PM Cole Hamels (7-2, 3.01 ERA) vs Jeff Karstens (3-4, 3.58 ERA)

Saturday 7:05 PM Kyle Kendrick (3-3, 3.18 ERA) vs Charlie Morton (5-2, 2.51 ERA)

Sunday 1:35 PM Roy Halladay (7-3, 2.56 ERA) vs James McDonald (3-3, 4.85 ERA)

Three Games, Three Aces, One Win?

It was a rough series in our nation’s capital for the Philadelphia Phillies these past three days, as they dropped two out of three games to the last place Washington Nationals. On Monday, Roy Halladay took the ball and earned the win as the Phillies rallied back from an early 2-0 deficit to top the Nationals 5-4. While they got the win, Halladay looked shaky for the second straight outing as he allowed ten hits, three of which were home runs, in his seven innings pitched, although he did strike out five batters and walked none. Ryan Madson earned his twelfth save of the season in fine fashion, striking out two, after Antonio Bastardo and Jose Contreras pitched a perfect eighth inning. Ryan Howard and Raul Ibanez carried the team’s offense, each hitting a home run and driving in two runs, while Dom Brown drove in the teams other run.

On Tuesday, the Cliff Lee failed to make it through six innings as the Phillies fell hard to the Nationals 10-2. Lee allowed seven hits, two of which were home runs, and six runs while walking three and striking out four in just five and a third innings pitched. Danys Baez gave up three runs in the seventh inning, and recent call up Mike Zagurski allowed one in the eighth. There wasn’t much to celebrate during this game aside from the back to back home runs from Dom Brown and John Mayberry in the fifth inning, sparks that had the Phillies back within three runs. Unfortunately, that was the closest they would come for the rest of the game,
and Lee lost his fifth game of the season while his ERA climbed to almost four.

Wednesday’s rubber match looked to be advantage Phillies, with talented righty Roy Oswalt matching up against Nationals struggling lefty John Lannan, who was 2-4 with a 4.40 ERA entering the game. The Phillies’ pitching staff finally clicked, holding the National’s to just two runs, but their anemic offense continued to struggle to produce, leading to a 2-1 loss and overall series loss. Roy Oswalt managed to pitch just five innings, allowing six hits, one of which was a home run, and two earned runs while walking two and striking out three. The Phillies looked to be on the verge of an offensive outburst in the sixth inning, but a stellar diving catch by left fielder Laynce Nix on a Dom Brown fly ball cut them off without a run.

This series should be a wakeup call for the Phillies, who clearly have some issues to address. Roy Halladay, even while tying the league lead in wins with seven, is struggling to keep teams from putting the ball in play. Cliff Lee, the heralded staff’s highest-paid pitcher, is a game under .500 with a high ERA and issues with his release point. Roy Oswalt, who already spent time on the disabled list this season, seems to be having durability issues, as he was pulled in the third game of the series after just 79 pitches and five innings. Thankfully, Cole Hamels, who also has 7 wins, is set to take the mound in at the outset of the next series and can hopefully stop this slide at two games. Another positive that can be found here is that the staff allowed six home runs this series, an anomaly that one expects would not happen again.

The other issue this series resided in the Phillies offense, which continues to struggle to produce runs on an everyday basis. There are bright spots however, as Dom Brown raised his average to .324 and Raul Ibanez continued his hot streak, and center field sparkplug Shane Victorino is set to return for Friday’s game against the Pirates. The Phillies concluded this stretch of twenty games in twenty days at 10-10, and still hold baseball’s best record. However, if these struggles continue and the Phillies fail to win series against bad teams like the Nationals, that may not be true for long.

McCoy Joins Eagles Workouts

The Philadelphia Eagles and other players have been holding some informal workouts during the lockout, and there was a new member of the Eagles joining them this time around.  The new member of their workouts was their starting runningback, LeSean McCoy.

Prior to joining his teammates on Tuesday, McCoy has been working out on his own, although there hasn't been to many football drills.  His workouts consisted of mostly running, lifting and conditioning.  He is getting in shape for the season, but due to where he plays there aren't as many drills for him to do.  Tuesday was his first football workout of the entire season.  With the lockout in place McCoy is going to have to continue these football workouts so that he is ready for whenever it is lifted.

This has been very different for NFL players and it is hard to keep at it.  They aren't used to this and it is a whole different routine for them.  They have to start figuring out a routine so that when they are allowed to return to the playing field they will be ready.  It was good to see McCoy working out with his teammates and getting ready for the NFL season, whenever that is.
